Hello
Welcome to my portfolio! I’m Sabrina Ontiveros, an animator and visual effects artist currently studying at New Mexico State University. I’m passionate about storytelling through animation, character design, compositing, and worldbuilding, and I love creating work that feels emotional, atmospheric, and visually expressive.
My Story
Art has always been the best way of communication for me. I have always felt more comfortable expressing myself through drawing than words. Since elementary school, art has been the way I explore ideas, emotions, and stories. While reading and writing were also important parts of my life growing up, drawing became the space where those interests came together. Over time, animation became the medium that allowed me to turn those ideas into moving stories with characters and worlds that begin as drawings. The animated film Mulan is a major part of what sparked my early interest in drawing and storytelling.
My work focuses primarily on 2D animation, 2D compositing, and traditional drawing. It explores how movement, atmosphere, and visual composition work together to communicate emotion and narrative. Animation allows me to combine illustration, storytelling, and cinematic techniques to create scenes that feel immersive and expressive.
My creative process usually begins with traditional drawing and character development. I enjoy exploring ideas through sketching, building characters/environments, and developing visual storytelling through storyboards. From there, animation and compositing allow me to shape the timing, mood, and visual rhythm of a scene. Animators such as James Baxter have influenced my appreciation for expressive character performance. I am particularly interested in how lighting, color, and composition can guide the viewer’s attention and strengthen the emotional impact of a moment.
Many of the themes I explore in my work revolve around emotion, transformation, and the relationship between characters and their environments. I am drawn to stories that combine strong atmosphere, darker themes, and expressive visual style, similar to the tone often seen in the work of Tim Burton. At the same time, I enjoy balancing darker storytelling with humor and personality, inspired by the tone of shows like Rick and Morty. Visually, my style often blends stylized character design with cinematic environments to create a sense of depth, mood, and narrative focus. I am used to using lighting, color, and composition to reflect a character’s emotions and internal state, often creating contrast between the darker and atmospheric visuals/movements of humor and personality. One example of this approach can be seen in my animated project Perfect Dissonance, where I explore emotion and transformation through character performance and symbolic imagery. Through projects like this, I aim to create stories that feel both visually engaging and meaningful.
My goal as an artist is to continue developing animated stories that feel meaningful, visually compelling, and emotionally resonant. I want my work to connect with audiences emotionally while maintaining a distinct visual style. I am interested in creating animated films, series, and even exploring working on the animated sides of games, music videos, and other visual media. Through animation, I can take ideas that begin as simple sketches and transform them into fully realized worlds. Ultimately, I hope my work invites viewers to connect with characters and imaginative worlds that balance emotion, darkness, and humor.
